We all want skin that’s healthy and glowing, and most of us have developed our own ‘beauty ritual’ or skincare routine, even if it’s as simple as washing our face with a cleanser as soon as we wake up. But our skin’s needs change – especially as we get older. You may notice that your skin may feel drier than before, and you need to use a moisturizer every day (which, by the way, is recommended by experts – dermatologists agree that we should start moisturizing in our 30s). But believe it or not, you may also have certain habits that could end up damaging your skin more (and we’ve all been guilty of picking at our zits and pimples). But what other habits do you have that are not good for your skin? Here’s a look at the worst skin care habits ruining your skin.
1- Skipping Sun Protection
One of the biggest skincare mistakes we make is skipping sun protection. Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from harmful UV rays that can cause sunburn, premature ageing, and even skin cancer, and it’s even more crucial if you’ve had anti wrinkle injections. Unfortunately, many of us only apply sunscreen when spending time outdoors, but on the contrary, you should wear it every day, even if you’re just staying indoors! Invest in a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 (or higher), and apply it to your face, neck, and other exposed skin areas.
2- Using Harsh and Abrasive Cleansers
While we know that keeping your skin clean and free from dirt is important, harsh cleansers can do more harm than good. Cleansers containing fragrances, alcohol, or other harsh chemicals can strip your skin of its oils, leading to skin irritation, dryness, acne, and other skin issues. Look instead for fragrance-free, gentle cleansers that won’t disrupt your skin’s natural barrier.
3- Over-exfoliating your Skin
There’s such a thing as over-exfoliating, and you may be guilty of it. Yes, exfoliating can be a great way to remove dead skin cells and promote the turnover of the skin’s cells – but over-exfoliating can damage your skin. If you exfoliate too often or use products that are too abrasive, you can cause micro-tears in your skin, which can result in irritation and inflammation. Just exfoliate once or twice a week, and always use gentle products that won’t end up damaging your skin.
4- Sleeping with your Makeup!
Sleeping with your makeup on is one of the worst things you can do for your skin. Makeup can clog your pores, leading to irritation and breakouts, and it can also trap oil, dirt, and bacteria on your skin, causing further damage. Always remove your makeup before bed every evening, using a gentle cleanser and makeup remover if necessary.
5- Picking at your Skin
Lastly, we come to the habit that most of us are guilty of – and while it’s certainly tempting to pick at blemishes, this can cause your blemishes to worsen and result in other skin problems, besides. Picking at your skin can cause inflammation, infection, and scarring, worsening the issue. Use spot treatments instead – or, better yet, visit a dermatologist for professional advice.
Taking care of your skin requires a commitment to healthy habits and routines. By avoiding these worst skincare habits, you can protect your skin from damage and maintain a healthy, glowing complexion. Always wear sunscreen, use gentle products, and give your skin the hydration and care it needs to thrive.
