Tongi, born on September 1, 2004, hails from the beautiful state of Hawaii. Raised in a household immersed in music, he found guidance and motivation in his father, Rodney Guy Tongi, who served as his mentor and source of inspiration. Rodney taught Iam how to play the guitar and sing and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Iam also had the support of his mother, Lillie N Rodney Tongi, and his three siblings, Lerod, Cassandra, and Leilei.

However, tragedy struck when Iam was only 16 years old. His father passed away on December 28, 2020, after a long battle with cancer, leaving Iam devastated and heartbroken. Iam dedicated all of his performances on American Idol to his late father, who he said was watching over him from heaven. He also wore a necklace with his father’s picture on it as a tribute.

Iam Tongi used his music as an outlet for his grief and a way to honor his father’s legacy. He auditioned for American Idol in February 2023, singing James Blunt’s hit song Monsters. His powerful and emotional rendition moved the judges and the viewers alike, earning him a golden ticket to Hollywood. His audition video went viral on YouTube, garnering over 12 million views.

Iam Tongi continued to impress the judges and the audience with his amazing voice and charisma throughout the competition. He sang iconic songs such as The Winner Takes It All by ABBA, What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, etc. He also performed a duet with James Blunt himself during the finale, singing Monsters Again.
