Ways to Support Your Child’s Mental Health 2023

Just like your own mental health is important in helping you to focus on tasks and live a happy and healthy life, the mental health of your child needs to take priority as well. Many parents want to give their children the best, but they need to make sure to put a good focus on the mental health of their child as well.


The good news is there are a number of tasks that you can take on as a parent that will help improve the mental health of your child, giving them a leg up in the world and helping to shape them into well-adjusted young adults later on. Some of the ways that you can support your child’s mental health include:

Encourage a Healthy Lifestyle

There are a number of steps that you must participate in with this step to help your child. We are going to look at three of them; namely a good exercise routine, healthy eating, and getting enough sleep.

First, you need to encourage your child to get enough exercise during the week. It is not a good idea to let them spend most of the day inside, watching television or playing games. Encourage your child to find some kind of activity, both inside and outside, that they enjoy doing. It doesn’t have to be a sport if they aren’t into athletics. But it should get them up and moving.

Next, you need to encourage them to eat healthy. Try to provide them with well-balanced meals that fuel the body and the mind. Let them help make decisions on meals and teach them about the food pyramid and why you choose certain foods over others. When they have the knowledge to handle their eating habits, it can help with their mental health too.

And you must make sure that your child gets enough sleep. Your brain needs a lot of sleep to avoid being irritable, in a bad mood, and suffering from poor concentration. Ensure that your child has a regular bedtime each night and that you get them to sleep early enough so they get enough hours for their age.

Encourage Positive Relationships

To help your child have a healthy mind, you need to help them feel connected to others. Humans will need social connections to grow and thrive. Help your child learn how to maintain friendships that are healthy and that help them feel positive at the same time. You can do this by providing chances for them to engage with other children their age.

Provide your child with the chance to nurture some of the friendships they have with school friends. You can also encourage them to spend some time with other supportive adults, like aunts and uncles, and grandparents. Model what a healthy relationship should look like by having good friendships in your own life as well.

Validate Their Feelings

Next on the list is to take the time to validate the feelings of your child. Help your child to understand that all feelings, even the ones that may not feel that good, are okay to feel. Let them know that they are safe to express their feelings and that they do not need to hide them. Provide them with some of the languages they need to express these feelings.

In addition, teach your child how to manage their feelings. Model this in your own life so that they are able to learn. When we are more open and honest about the way that we feel in different situations, our children will feel more confident coming to us with their feelings. Help your child to express their feelings in a mature way, rather than bottling them up.

Connect as a Family

You need to take the time to connect with your child. If you are always busy running around and not spending time with one another, it is hard to really form some of those big connections that you need as a family. But you need to start making this one of your top priorities if you would like to work on the mental health of your child as well.

This does not have to be super difficult. Take the time to eat meals together. Make time to play. Go on dates together. Spend time cuddling and watching a movie together. Spend time outdoors together. Your goal is to fill up the love tank of your child as much as you can. And always remember that as a parent, you should show your love to your child unconditionally.

Consider a Neuropsychological Evaluation

One thing that you may want to consider is a neuropsychological evaluation for your child. This is a unique type of evaluation that is going to help you diagnose a learning or behavior disorder that is caused by altered development or brain function in your child. It will dive much deeper into the mental and developmental milestones of your child compared to school assessments.

There are a number of things that this evaluation are going to assess. Some of them include:

  • Social skills
  • Behavioral and emotional functioning
  • Motor coordination
  • Visual and spatial skills
  • Language
  • Learning and memory
  • Attention
  • Executive skills like inhibition, organization, and flexibility
  • Achievement skills like math and reading
  • General intellect

Some abilities can be measured in more detail compared to some of the rest, based on the needs of the child. A detailed developmental history from the teacher can be done as well. The psychologist can then make recommendations to provide a complete treatment option for your child based on the findings.
