Last week, we ran several questions from a Personal Care Truth reader. Several of our experts replied with their answers, and we felt it would be better to have an individual post for each one.
1. What purpose does this natural scare “movement” have in demonizing parabens, SLS, petroleum, aluminum etc.? It is simply the almighty dollar?
2. It is my understanding that many of these ingredients are indeed cheap and that is why they are used, not because they are better for you or that there isn’t a safer option. So, that’s great for me – and American with a little extra cash to choose what I want to buy – but we are indeed then not harming people by offering an affordable option albeit with synthetic ingredients? If we can afford to pay for better ingredients, shouldn’t we?
3. Other than correcting the vast amount of misinformation regarding cosmetics, what is the agenda of PCTS – and by this I mean why do you care that people continue to safely use parabens and SLS and propylene glycol? Is it because the misleading facts are crippling smaller cosmetic businesses that are getting a bad reputation?

We feel that part of the purpose of this scare movement is simply to raise money for EWG causes. It is apparently much easier to raise money when you scare people. For me it is about choice. I choose to make natural botanical products because I think they are better products, but that doesn’t mean that other ingredients are toxic or harmful, it is a choice and a lifestyle.
The cosmetics industry seems to be always evolving; new ingredients are continually coming out that are derived from vegetable sources, new actives are coming on the market and it is very exciting to learn about and to try these new ingredients. We are always constantly learning more about safety and efficacy of ingredients and have to be open to new science and changing what we do based on new research. None of these answers are black and white, there are many gray areas and scare does not help. But consumers who demand certain ingredients be left out

Another reason for me being involved in Personal Care Truth is that legislation introduced by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics also legislated against many natural ingredients that I am very fond. People think that the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is for natural ingredients, but that is not the case. Some of their legislation if passed would have banned many essential oils from use as well as many herbal extracts based on minute amounts of carcinogens occurring naturally in plants.
